Why Is The Garage Door Opening By Itself?

A faulty garage door can open the road to a lot of threats. From burglary to trauma, anything can happen. A garage door opening by itself is an issue that needs prompt dealing to avoid any mishap.

When the garage door opens or closes itself automatically, the phenomenon is known as phantom operation. There is no need to worry though, the solutions are pretty simple, and this technical difficulty will go away in no time.

Let’s get to the causes first; then, we will move on to the solutions.

Why Does A Garage Door Keep Opening By Itself?

Here are 4 probable causes of a garage door opening itself.

Safety Sensors

Safety features are added to the garage door, which automatically opens when they detect any block during closing. The motors are responsible for handling this. If the door, while closing, finds any sort of resistance, then it will immediately open itself up. This goes for the slightest of resistance, such as a shoe or pile of leaves even.
Another reason for garage door opening after closing itself is improper alignment of floor sensors. The sensors are put on the tracks, and in case of a bent, they will stop working.
Thankfully, the doors come with a light that blinks if any blocking is present that might cause the garage door to start opening itself. However, if you do not find anything there, the sensor might need replach2ent.

Check Garage Door Button Opener

The button is somewhat similar to a doorbell; if your garage door activates using a button, make sure there is no pressure and free from debris. The accumulation of dirt and dust can easily cause pressure to build on it, making the garage door open itself.
Forget not to check the wiring and circuit connection of the house as well. You might be doing everything right and not checking the circuit where the problem lies.

Transformer and Control Board

If you find no issues with the wiring and safety sensors, then you must have a look at the control board. Your garage door might be opening itself due to the faulty board. Sudden power surges and voltage fluctuations are the main reason for it going bad. It is a good practice to check the voltage coming in using a multimeter periodically.

Radar Problem

It is one of the least common occurrences but may happen. If you find none of your garage door problems, it is still opening and closing itself; talk to your neighbors. They might have set their garage door with the same code causing the sensors to detect it. It is a very rare phenomenon but not completely irrelevant.

Solutions for Garage Door Opening Problem

  1. Change the radio frequency or code– the sensors work on frequencies and catch radio waves. Other devices like car radios, a nearby police vehicle, or your neighbor’s garage door can get mixed. If you are lucky, changing the code and frequency will easily solve your problem.
  2. Make sure the button is clean and the circuit is working as it should. Check for the light streak that indicates a pushed button.
  3. Check the position of sensors; even the slightest bend can cause thh2 to malfunction.

Conclusion

A garage door opening itself is problematic. If you can’t seh2 to find where the fault lies, it is better to approach a professional. Garage Door Doctor is here for your aid; call now at 281 855 9300 or 281 578 7659 to talk to a professional and get the best services at most affordable price.

Garage doors are an integral part of the house. Energy efficient garage doors contribute greatly towards the environment and make the home owner’s life easier. Using eco-friendly doors would increase efficiency to a great extent.

If you are wondering whether or not to make such a big expenditure on your door, keep on reading to know what are energy efficient garage doors and the benefits of having them.

What is an Eco-friendly Energy Efficient Garage Door?

An energy efficient garage door is planned and designed to have the least impact on the environment. Below is the list of parameters to determine whether the garage door qualifies as an eco-friendly option or not.

  • Eco-friendly construction materials used for the door.
  • Life of the product.
  • Its strength to bear weather extremes, for example, strong winds.
  • Its efficiency to conserve energy after the installation process.
  • The construction process with recycled materials.

When a door checks all the pointers above, it is qualified as a green or environment friendly garage door.

Benefits of Using an Energy Efficient Garage Door

Eco-friendly garage doors have multiple benefits. Here’s why you should install them.

1. Saving Energy And Cost

For any house, insulation is an important aspect. An energy efficient or green door will aid in keeping your garage area warm during winters and cool it up when summers arrive. Apt insulation will keep in warm air, while the air conditioner won’t strain during summer season. Thus, maintenance of temperature will result in less energy consumption. Less energy used – less billing amount.

2. Cost-Effective Maintenance

Energy efficient garage doors are built with durable, strong materials. They have a longer life span compared to other options. When less bills and repair expenses combine, it saves a lot of money on the whole.

3. Sound Proofing

Insulation is one of the key factors of eco-friendly garage doors. They keep the heat in and block unnecessary noise from coming in and going out.

4. Adds to the Curb Appeal

Your home is an asset. There will come a day when you’d move on for a better opportunity or a bigger, better house. At that time, this asset with good appearance will pay off.

Eco-friendly/ Energy Efficient Garage Door Materials

Here is a list of energy saving materials used to make environment friendly garage door

  • Steel
  • One of the most loved and used materials is steel due to its strength and durability. However, it does not play the best role when it comes to insulation. A thicker, low-gauge steel is preferred to make this kind of garage door.

One way to turn this issue around is to have a multi-layered door with insulating materials in between. This has an increased impact on efficiency.

  • Composite Wood
  • It is a relatively new material and is gaining popularity. Composite wood is a mix of plastic, wood, and other additives. The amount of each component varies. Usually, recycled materials are added, which makes it an eco-friendly option. It is a durable option that needs less maintenance.

  • Polystyrene
  • For foolproof insulation, polystyrene is the best choice. The thicker the foam greater would be its ability to trap heat.

  • Polyurethane
  • It’s better than polystyrene but is less thick. It is sprayed inside a foam which helps cover the small spaces providing better insulation.

Conclusion

Deciding to go Eco-friendly is a big step that will surely prove fruitful in the coming years. When planning to go green, head over to Garage Door Doctor in Houston TX. Breakdown of Garage Door Panel Replacement in Easy Steps

When it comes to garage doors, everyone wants the best for their house. Be it installation, repair, or replacement. This blog has every question that you might have regarding the garage door panel replacement answered.

When do you need a garage door panel replacement?

Garage doors are composed of panels pivoted together. Changing the entire door just because of one thing can be costly. However, you can easily replace one or more panels of the garage door if they are damaged.

Panel replacement is best when the garage door has had a minor impact giving it structural damage. Like a car bumping in at low speed or smaller moving objects like a lawn mower crashing into it.

Is it okay to remove one or more panels?

Indeed, it is possible to replace more than one garage door panel at a time. However, multiple renewals could cost more than getting the whole door changed. So make sure to analyze the gravity of the situation properly.

Easy steps to replace the garage door panel

Find appropriate material for replacement

Look out for the garage door manufacturer and get information on the make and model of the panels and the door itself. This step has immense importance since every company has its own design and size. You need to find the originator for a perfect fit.

Panel removal – safety and replacement

Once you get the best fit panels for your garage door, it is time to replace it. But first, let us discuss the safety measures that should be taken to avoid any unfortunate incidence.
Firstly, move the garage door to a downward position
Turn off and unplug your garage door opener
Remove the springs
Next, start the removal of the panels. Make space to separate the panels from each other, which are hinged together. Screw out the damaged panel and move it over.

Installing new garage door panel

After moving the old panel out, slide the replacement in its place. Screw it together with others. Hinge them together. Once you are done, slide the garage door in an open position and fix the spring.

Match the panels

One pressing concern of a panel replacement of garage doors is uniformity. The panels should look exactly like each other. Painting the old ones to match the replacements is a good option.

The steps may be less, but the process is complicated. Why not let Garage Door Doctor handle this job? They are best at what they do. Call now for more information at 281 855 9300.

The Importance Of Annual Garage Door Maintenance

An important portion of your living space, the garage door, is often overlooked. Garage doors need constant maintenance to make them a safe entry point. Your garage door’s opening and closing mechanism move hundreds of pounds so you can easily open your garage to park your car or access the tools.

Regular maintenance for garage doors isn’t optional but necessary if you want them to operate effectively for years. Annual checkups will keep you informed of necessary repairs or upgrades required by your garage door. Follow the maintenance guidelines to ensure your garage door keeps working without trouble.

Be aware of the natural changes

Being prepared for the degrading parts will help with early detection. Over the years, erosion, rust, and other damages can affect the functionality of your garage door. When things get worse, the door may not operate swiftly or stop working at all. Inspect your garage door weekly or monthly, so these gradual damages don’t disturb your life.

Financial benefits

Most garage door components, including hinges, coil springs, brackets, or bearing plates, have a short lifespan and need replacements. It might look like a big task, but replacing a hinge or bracket is a simple and less expensive process than opting for the complete installation of a new garage door.
Small repairs and replacements over the years will increase the lifespan of your garage door. These are small investments with relatively big returns.

Make sure everything’s on track

You are about to leave the house to buy some groceries, and a storm is on its way. All you want is your garage door to function properly so you can easily take out your car and park it back without any issues. Be confident about your garage door by ensuring it complies with safety standards. You don’t want troubles like a stuck garage door, worn-out sensors, or other similar issues.

Regular maintenance will promise you peace of mind that your home is secure. Prepare a maintenance checklist and mark if any parts need repairs or replacements, so your garage door stays in good shape for the coming year.

Protecting yourself and your family

Many people, when they go out, are worried about the burglary of their home, and many worry even when they are present inside. Being concerned about the safety of your home or family is a natural thing. Many people use the garage door to enter their home, and they should be very secure.

Call Professional Help

Make sure your garage door is operating effectively by scheduling a professional garage door maintenance. An annual checkup will keep you satisfied with the security of your home, the safety of your family, and the stability of your garage door.

How to Install a Single Torsion Spring on a Garage Door: 7 Easy Steps

If the torsion spring of your garage door is problematic, you can save a few bucks by replacing them yourself. But without an expert hand, it can become difficult to complete the job correctly. With the right knowledge and expertise, you can prevent injuries during the replacement. Keep reading to learn how to install a single torsion spring on a garage door yourself.
How To Install A Single Torsion Spring On A Garage Door

1. Clamp the Door to the Track

In the first step, you need to clamp the locking pliers, which prevents the door from going upward while you replace the garage door spring. Its second job is to protect you while installing the newer spring later on. To do so, pull the cord and let loose the door opener before replacing the spring.

2. Loosen and Unwind the Functional Garage Door Spring

By pushing the winding bar into the spring’s bottom hole, lose the functional spring. To avoid any movement, lose the screws while keeping hold of the bar.
To avoid any injuries, hold the bar very strongly. The spring can give a powerful push, so a solid grip will ensure you are safe. Move the winding bar into a straighter position and then remove the bottom bar. To unwind the garage door spring, do a quarter turn.

3. Disconnect the Springs

Remove the bolts and nuts from central brackets and hold the torsion tube using locking pliers. Insert them into the bracket and loosen the screw after checking the left and right cable drums. Now you can disconnect the cables.

4. Remove the Old Spring

To remove the old spring, slide the torsion tube to either left or right, depending on your garage door type. Next, install the new spring to the torsion tube. Install garage door wire and cable drum in place. Now place the torsion bar with a new spring.

5. Install the New Center Bearing

Attach stationary cones with the bracket and then install the right spring while propelling the bearing to the cone. Now install the drum before you connect the stationary cones.

6. Insert Cables and Tighten Drums

Now’s the time for the installation of new cables. Steer the lift cables that are between the doorjamb and rollers. Next, move the lift cable stop, so it reaches the drum. Make sure the cable is firm, and then tighten the set screws of winding grooves.
Do the same for the other side and make sure the door has equal tension on both sides.
Next, use a winding bar to wind the cone towards the ceiling.

7. Finish the Installation

To install a single torsion spring on the garage door, you just need to accomplish one final step.
Use a winding bar to stretch the spring. This is an important step before tightening the set screws. Take a garage door spray and lubricate the spring.
Summing Up
Following the above steps, you may now have a pretty good idea of how to install a single torsion spring on a garage door.
Sometimes the installation doesn’t go smoothly your door might not work as you expected. Now that you have done your part, it’s time to call the garage door experts. Let the professionals handle your worries. Call 281-855-9300 or 281-578-7659 for fast service!

HOW DO I REMOVE RUST FROM MY GARAGE DOOR?

Your garage door is like your home’s first impression! And garage door rust can give a negative impression of your house. Not only does it look unattractive, but it can also lead to costly damage if it’s not cleaned properly.

Most modern garage doors are rust-resistant. But if you have a steel garage door, it may eventually catch rust. Having garage door rust is quite common in places where snow, rain, and other rust-causing materials like dust or road salt collect. If you live near a coastal region, your garage door can likely rust due to humidity present in the air.

As rust can spread quickly, it can eventually start eating holes in it before you even know. That’s why it is crucial to get the rust off your garage door right away. Let’s take a look at 5 easy steps to remove garage door rust.

5 Steps To Remove Garage Door Rust

Here are the 5 easy steps to clean your garage door’s rust and make it look good as new.

1. Wipe down the rust

Use a cloth and soak it in white vinegar. Then wipe down all rusted areas of your garage door with it. This is because vinegar is effective in dissolving rust. After that, get rid of all the rust because even a tiny amount of it can start the oxidation process and continue growing. For this reason, you can use a steel-wool pad to scrub your door.

2. Fill in all holes

Rust can cause holes in your garage door. After getting rid of it, fill the holes (if any) using an auto body filler or any other bonding agent for metal. Once the bonding agent has dried, sand it with a fine-grit sheet. Do it on your entire door. When you’re done, wipe the dust with a dry cloth or a brush.
Note: It may be better to replace your garage door if the rust is extensive or the door is old. If your garage door is near the end of its lifespan, please feel free to contact Garage Door Doctor. Sometimes only the bottom panel of your door is affected by rust. You can replace the individual panel instead of replacing the entire door. Talk to our garage door repair technician to explore more options.

3. Wash the door

Before applying paint to your garage door, it’s essential to clean your door thoroughly. This is because the paint won’t adhere to grease or dirt, and it can also leave bumps on the surface. To wash your door, you can use a solution of trisodium phosphate (TSP) mixed in warm water. If it’s not available, any solution of warm water and soap will work fine too. Finally, wash your garage door with water and let it dry completely.

4. Cover specific areas on the door

Once you’re done cleaning the garage door rust, cover your door’s handles, window panels, and nearby walls. You can do so by masking paper over them and securing them with tape. This will avoid paint getting onto the areas that you do not want to paint.

5. Paint the door

Before painting your door, it is advisable to apply primer or undercoat to your door to ensure better adhesion. Make sure you use rust-resistant primer and paint designed for metal garage doors. Similarly, check if your garage door’s manufacturer recommends specific products and techniques.

Last but not least, if your garage door is under a warranty that covers rust, avoid removing the rust yourself. Contact your garage door manufacturer and ask them to remedy your garage door’s rust.

How to Lubricate a Garage Door: 7 Easy Steps

Are you irritated by the screeching and banging of your garage door every time you head home from a long day of work? If yes, you’re not alone. Noisy garage doors are a nuisance to everyone. Well, you don’t have to live with that irritating noise anymore. We are here to tell you some easy steps to lubricate your garage door. So, let’s find out!

Why is your garage door noisy?

Garage doors often become loud and squeaky because of improper maintenance. A noisy garage door is a sign that it isn’t greased enough. And if left ungreased, your garage door can even lead to severe damage later on. Thankfully, you can prevent the noise and prolong the life of your garage door with proper maintenance and lubrication. You can also contact Garage Door Doctor today for a fast, affordable, and reliable solution to your garage door problems. That said, let’s get to the garage door’s pre-lubrication maintenance checklist.

Pre-Lubrication Maintenance Checklist

Before you start lubricating your garage door, let’s complete the necessary maintenance tasks. Here’s the list of things you need to do:

Unplug your door: you should close your garage door and cut off your door with an electricity supply.
Tighten parts of your door: make sure you snug the nuts and bolts. But don’t over-tighten them. Try replacing worn parts if necessary.
Check the rollers: most rollers contain unsealed bearings that pile up dirt and break down with time. Thus, they result in creating noise.
Inspect the hinges: hinges can worn out over time that can create noise, and cause friction in the door.
Tighten your garage door opener chain: a loose chain can make banging sounds and potentially cause jerks while opening and closing the door.

Once you’re done with these essential pre-lubrication checks, let’s start garage door lubrication!

Step-By-Step Guide: How to Lubricate a Garage Door

The most crucial thing while greasing your garage door is to be thorough. Moreover, you should get all of the moving parts (except the chain!). Follow these simple steps down below to lubricate a garage door.

  1. Close the door and turn off the power.
  2. Wipe the tracks with a rag to remove dirt. Ensure not to use any lubricant on the tracks as it can make it harder for the rollers to move. Thus, burdening your garage door opener.
  3. Lubricate each hinge of your door thoroughly.
  4. Lubricate garage door rollers. Apply an adequate amount of lubricant (grease) to the rollers, including ball bearings. You can wipe away any excess lubricant to avoid unbalancing your garage door. Conversely, in case you have plastic or nylon rollers, you should replace them instead of lubricating them.
  5. Lubricate the bearing plates and torsional springs. Make sure to open and close your door a few times to evenly distribute the lubricant.
  6. If you have a lock, lubricate it along with the armbar to make it easier for you to manually lock the door. You can also lubricate the keyhole.
  7. Apply grease on the top of the rail (where the chain rides in). Spread the grease around with a rag. Make sure not to lubricate your garage door chain since it already has a coating.

Note: If you’re wondering what the best lubricant for garage doors is, we recommend you use lithium or silicon-based grease spray. This will effectively lube your garage door. You can check which one suits your case better. On the other hand, we advise you NOT to use oil or WD-40 as a lubricant for garage doors. Oil can easily collect dust, and WD-40 can potentially damage certain parts of your door because it’s not a lubricant!

How Often Should You Lubricate a Garage Door?

You should lubricate all the moving parts of your garage door every six months. This will extend your door’s lifespan and keep it quiet and smooth. But if you live in a harsh climate or near the beach, you should lubricate your garage door every three months or more. If you think your garage door needs repair or maintenance, you can contact us anytime. Call the Garage Door Doctor now at 281-855-9300 and get same-day service!

How it Works: Parts of a Garage Door

When something goes wrong with your garage door, it’s stressful. Whether it is stuck or sounding strange, it’s hard to know what to do.

Without understanding the essential parts of a garage door, you may not be sure if your door poses an immediate danger or simply needs routine service. One failing part could damage another, leading to costly replacements. Here’s a quick list of the essential parts, what they do, and what you should look for.

The Garage Door

For the garage door to fold up along the tracks and into the ceiling, it will be designed with section joints. These are separate panels that seal tightly when the door is closed but fold when the door is opened, allowing for a transition up and down. They should fold smoothly and without sticking or bumping.

The Track System

The parts of the garage door doing the heavy lifting make up the track system. It should be sturdy, straight, and free of twists. Each track consists of these basic elements:

Two bottom brackets at the lower door corners, housing the rollers. These attach to cables, letting the door slide up and down. The brackets should be stable, and the rollers should slide freely.

At the top, you’ll find the cable drum. This winds the cables when the door opens. The cables should never look frayed or split, and everything should move easily.

The cable drum is attached to the torsion spring, which is mounted above the door. If space is tight, you may find extension springs. They’ll be found above the hanger track.

The hanger track secures to the wall and runs back along the ceiling until it reaches the rear hanger track. The hanger track creates a secure way for the rollers to bring the door up and down. It shouldn’t look bowed or bent.

The rear hanger track attaches to the ceiling and stops the door’s motion. This is a strong piece, and once attached, it shouldn’t ever appear loose.

Extra Parts of a Garage Door

One of the most popular extras for convenience and safety, automatic garage door openers replace the need to lift the door. For safety, they have photoelectric sensors, stopping the door if something is near it. Remote controls let you open and close the door without leaving your vehicle. The opener will make noise, but it shouldn’t grind or stall.

If you are inexperienced with garage door repair, any repair job can be a dangerous one. Never try to repair the door yourself, especially springs and cables. If one breaks, don’t try to move the door, and never touch the springs. Garage Door Doctor can fix it quickly, safely, and eliminate your worries. Call today at (281) 855-9300.

Garage doors can be damaged by the weather, vehicle accidents, rust, and a whole list of other things. If the damage is severe, it may be impossible to repair.

Repaired Often

It may be time to replace your garage door if it needs to be repaired frequently. This could be the same repair, such as fixing the track or rollers, or perhaps there’s just always something new that needs to be fixed. By replacing it with a new door, you can prevent the need for numerous, costly repairs.

No Safety Features

New safety features are an excellent reason to replace your garage door, especially if you have young children in the home. Using motion detection, the door can stop or even reverse motion if something is below or passes in front of the door as it’s closing. This can prevent unnecessary injuries.

Not Energy Efficient

New garage doors and garage door openers are much more energy-efficient than ones even just a few years old. If your system is older and facing repairs anyway, it could be time for an upgrade.

The Age of the Door

As a garage door ages, it will naturally need more repairs. If it is getting older and has needed repairs lately, you can replace your garage door and avoid the need for future repairs due to mechanical failure.

More Cost-Effective

If the cost of the necessary repairs is higher than replacing the door, it makes more sense to choose a new one. Even if the repairs aren’t more than a new door, but are still quite high, the benefits of replacing it could outweigh paying for the repairs.

Types of Garage Door Openers: Choosing the Right One

Many homeowners don’t realize that there are a few different types of garage door openers. Depending on the size and weight of the door, the space available in the garage, and your budget, you have several to choose from. Keep reading to learn more about each type and its benefits.

Chain Drive

A chain drive is one of the most common types of garage door openers. It is also the most affordable and very dependable which makes it a popular choice among homeowners. The metal chain and gear are reliable even for heavy doors but they can be noisy.

Belt Drive

Belt drive openers have a similar mechanical function to chain drives which makes them just as reliable but a belt drive is much quieter. These openers are a bit more expensive but with the added benefit of less noise, they can be less disruptive if the door is opened at night when the family might be sleeping.

Screw Drive

Screw drive garage door openers are quiet and fast but best for lightweight or single-car garage doors. The screw and gears can wear down quickly with heavier doors and constant use. You’ll also need to make sure you lubricate the gears and screw regularly to prevent premature wear. These are also recommended for homes that have separate one-car sized garage doors for a larger garage space.

Wall Mount

Wall-mounted garage door openers are also called jackshaft or direct drive openers. These are ideal when there is little space for a traditional, overhead garage door opener. They use a system of pulleys and cables to effectively raise and lower the door. Wall-mounted openers are dependable and some of the quietest openers available. Depending on your needs, they may be similar in price to a belt drive option so if you’re upgrading, be sure to consider a wall mount as well.

Smart Garage Door Openers

These days, technology is everywhere, and it’s even reached your garage door. New smart systems can alert you if your garage door has been left open, let you open and close it from your smartphone, and even connect it to the rest of your smart home upgrades via your hub. Smart garage door openers sometimes come with optional add-ons like carbon-monoxide sensors or a parking-assist feature.

If you are replacing your garage door opener, thinking of upgrading it, or installing one for the first time, you should consider all your options. Call or text the Garage Door Doctor today at (281) 855-9300 or (281) 578-7659 to schedule an appointment.

Is Your Garage Door Opener Beeping?

If you have a premium garage door opener installed in your garage; it’ll have a battery backup and the capability to connect with Wi-Fi. The purpose of this is to alert you by making a beeping sound. The beep is to inform you that a step you are performing is complete or an issue with the device. The number of beeps depends on the type of task you perform on the garage door and the type of garage you have installed.

The garage door opener is beeping every 2 seconds.

  • If you hear a beep every two minutes, this indicates that the unit has lost power and has shifted to backup battery power. The battery LED will display a solid orange color.
  • You need to ensure the power at home is quickly restored. Once the power is back up, and if the orange light is still lit, then test the electrical outlet where the unit is connected. You can plug in another device in the same outlet to check if there is power coming into the outlet. If there is something wrong with the outlet, you will have to call in an electrician to see it.

The garage door opener is beeping every 30 seconds.

  • If there is an orange light flashing, this is an indicator that the battery is low.
  • Check the electrical outlet by plugging in a different device. If the power is up, and the LED has not changed from orange to green, you will have to replace the batteries.
  • But if the LED displays a solid red color, this indicates that the battery is entirely out of power and you cannot recharge it. Hence you will have to replace the batter.

Keep a note that you can stop the beeping until you have replaced the battery. You can unplug the unit from the electrical outlet and remove the battery. Once the battery is out, you can plug the unit back into the electrical outlet, and you will notice that the beeping will stop. If this sounds like a difficult task, you can always call us, Garage Door Doctor. Our experts will visit your location and do the needful. Call us now at 281-855-9300 or 281-578-7659.
